Eddie Grant
68Do you remember Eddie Grant?
More importantly, do you remember the group he first started his singing career with called The Equals?
When I was a little girl I lived near a shop where a big family of what I thought were brothers lived and worked. As an adult I realize that my memory was wrong and that there were only two brothers who were twins. You can understand the mistake though.I visualize the shop in my mind as a sweet shop, but that could be wrong.I possible have got confused with one of the guys giving me a chocolate bar and equated that to a sweet shop in my child’s brain. At the time I thought they owned the shop, they probably didn't.I have four older siblings ranging from a six to eleven year gap above me, three of whom went to school with Eddie Grant. I should have asked them for more information regarding this subject before writing this hub, but I didn’t want to. I wanted to write this memory from my child’s mind.
They seemed so nice in my mind, this group and I think it was quite a good feeling knowing them and my family mixing with them at school. You must understand though, I had no awareness of who they were, even when my mother bought me my first ever record which of course was theirs, called Viva Bobby Joe. This was released in 1969 making me seven years old. Unless you’re late fortyish or older you might not recognise this single, you would more that likely know the great hits such as Baby Come Back or I Don’t Wanna Dance.
I guess the reason I wanted to share this with the world was because it was a strong pleasant memory from my childhood and Eddie Grant never seems to be associated with KentishTown. I think unless you are a massive fan most people presume his background lies in Brixton.
THE EQUALS - VIVA BOBBY JOE
BABY, COME BACK
Acland Burghley School, Tufnell Park, London
Eddie Grant went to Acland Burghley School along with the other members of the group he was in. Quite a few talented people have come out of that school. I have listed a few below, but I know there is more. I don’t know what its like now but in the sixties and seventies it was a school that excelled in the performing arts. At one point I thought one of my brothers would follow that career, he was very good on the stage in all aspects which included singing, dancing and acting. Acland Burghley nurtured this natural ability he possessed along with my mother's.
I have always lived around the Camden area where again like the school has given birth to some very well known talented artists.

How fun, thanks for sharing the memory!
