Skin Colour

Why is society so irate when an afrocaribian or mixed race person in the public eye changes skin colour? Do they deserve it? Is it part of the job description for being in the public eye?

Take Michael Jackson for instance.

Regardless of everything we have heard about him (another subject) he was always being criticized for changing his skin colour. He shocked the world when he released the single Black or White and he was a different colour.

Why not leave the poor guy alone? Even if he didn't have vitiligo and still wanted fairer skin, wasn't that his choice, personal to him only? Wasn't it enough for him to entertain us? He was an artist in all aspects of his life, including his body, like many of our great artists today including Lady Gaga and Jessie J.

It doesn't affect us does it, what someone else looks like. Isn't it just unkind for them to have to read about themselves constantly?

If a black person straightens their hair and makes their skin fairer they are making a statement about heritage and culture? They have issues?

If a white person has a perm and a tan they are just enjoying fashion.

Its just fashion for everyone isn't it?

Beyonce and Criticism

So who will we pick on next? The other week I did see an article in the paper regarding Beyonce. I don’t know if she has done anything to her skin, but what if she has?

Can’t we leave Beyonce alone?

Why does it have to become bigger than it actually is?

How would we like it?

Beyonce and Identity

Why do we feel it’s a betrayal of their identity to make their skin fairer? What about the millions of white people who go on holiday every year and soak up the sun desperate for a tan. We don't say anything about them. We don't feel they are betraying their heritage or they are ashamed in anyway.

What is the difference?

I tell you what it is.

Society has deemed the suntan acceptable.

Strange how cultures change. At one time in Britain it was frowned upon having a tan. It was a sign of a poor uneducated person.

Who Really Cares

I say leave them alone. Leave Beyonce alone. We cant do anything about Michael Jackson now, its too late, but we can be nice about Beyonce, the Queen of Pop. Who cares if someone has straight or curly hair, black or white skin. Do celebrities deserve everything they get because they are in the public eye?

Every time we put someone down we are elevating ourselves.

Let’s stop criticizing them and enjoy them instead.

Let’s enjoy their music and their entertainment.

Let's enjoy Beyonce and not do to her what we did to Michael.

lighter and brighter is more popular among society and it will always be a political debate regarding how dark or light a persons skin is, which is sad but it is the way of media.

It can be seen all over the world as a big deal and people do care because it reflects on how they see themselves more than how others see them.

We are all way too hung up on the skin thing. I live about 200 feet from a Cape Cod beach and every summer I watch some crazy tourists spend eight or more hours on the beach tanning. They DON'T LEAVE THE BEACH from nine a.m. to about 7 p.m. They are literally tring to cook themselves. It is insane.

You write about M. Jackson and his epidermal thing. but have you ever heard of George Hamilton? He's an old white dude who sprays brown or red stuff on his skin and he looks RIDICULOUS! Don't feel too bad about M Jackson being criticised...there are plenty of people that criticise Hamilton and he is just barely famous.

I do remember George Hamilton now you mention him. He is a brilliant example to use! As for the sun worship, its like The Emperor's New Clothes.

They must be uncomfortable cooking themselves all day, but will say they love it.

PS. You live in a lovely place. I'm jealous. I'm in foggy London Town.

Wow, This is a refreshing change. I agree, leave people alone. It's none of our business. I love Michael. People were so mean to him. He's no longer here , but we can learn that words and judgemental remarks hurt him deeply. Let's not make the same mistake with other celebrities. Thank you.

Cheers

Thanks for your comment Ruby. I loved Michael too and I feel that the world they live in is hard, believe it or not-although others may say different. Money isn't everything. Look at what has just happened to poor Amy Winehouse over the weekend. Another unhappy enormously talented and gifted human being fallen victim to this system!

I agree. I was shocked when i heard of Amy's death. She was so young and beautiful, living in the lime-light must be too much for some. Cheers
